Trashigang residents excited about the upcoming elections

As the countdown to the National Council (NC) and National Assembly (NA) elections begins, excitement is building up among the Trashigang residents.

Many residents, youths and shopkeepers shared that compared to the past, the number of NC aspirants has increased this time and this gives them an opportunity to choose the best.

“I am really excited about the upcoming elections; this will be real competition,” said a resident from Trashigang.

Another said the political parties have very good candidates this time and it will be a battle of the best. “We are ready to cast our vote for the best party as informed voters.”

At the same time, the Dzongkhag Election Office has been conducting voter education programs to create awareness about electoral procedures.

Dzongkhag Election Officer Tenzin said that people showed a strong interest in such programs as could be deduced from the attendance. “People in villages are now aware of the democratic procedures and electoral roles.”

Dorji, a farmer from Kanglung said that now he is aware of his right of franchise and the ways he should go about it since he makes sure not to miss any voter awareness program.

Meanwhile, Phub Dema, a college student from Kanglung is visibly excited because this year will be her first time voting and she is inspired to see fresh graduates contesting for the election.

Another student feels that both the present and former government has brought about many changes and he hopes the new government will contribute to nation building as well.

Additionally, Rigzin dorji, a student from Sherubtse College said that unlike previous years, the candidates seem to be well-versed with current issues.

A shopkeeper from Kanglung has been closely following aspiring NA candidates announced so far more than NC aspirants.

Currently, Trashigang has 11 council candidates.

Three parties-People’s Democratic Party, Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa and Bhutan Kuen-Nyam Party have opened offices in Trashigang.

The Dzongkhag Election Office is still updating the number of registered voters. Trashigang Dzongkhag has three dungkhags and 15 gewogs with a population of 74,441.
