Bhutan stands at a defining moment in its history—one that calls for courage, unity, and an unwavering focus on the future. In a powerful and far-reaching Royal Address during the 118th National Day celebrations, His Majesty The King delivered a message that resonated deeply across the nation and beyond its borders: Bhutan’s survival and prosperity will depend on bold decisions taken today, collective unity, and a long-term vision rooted in wisdom and national purpose.
Delivered from Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, the address centered on the visionary Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC)—a project His Majesty described not merely as development, but as a strategic cornerstone for the country’s future. GMC, he emphasized, represents a deliberate and carefully designed approach to nation-building—one that is people-centered, value-driven, and aligned with Bhutan’s unique identity.
His Majesty made it clear that GMC is not an ordinary urban or economic project. It is an extraordinary national endeavour intended to create opportunity, safeguard national resources, and prepare Bhutanese youth to shoulder responsibility in an increasingly complex world. At its core, GMC is about aligning economic growth with wisdom, mindfulness, and unity, ensuring that progress strengthens—not erodes—the foundations of Bhutanese society.
The address struck a powerful chord with citizens, leaders, and students alike. Pema Choki, an economics student at Sharda University in India, described His Majesty’s message as a clear roadmap for Bhutan’s future.
“When economic vision is guided by purpose, unity, and wisdom, it can strengthen Bhutan for generations to come,” she said.
A central theme of the address was the necessity of bold, forward-looking decision-making. His Majesty reminded the nation that meaningful progress often requires courage—not just in spending or investment, but in committing to outcomes that may only bear fruit years or decades later.
Sonam Tashi, Member of Parliament for Lamgong-Wangcha, reflected on this call for courage.
“We must be bold enough to take risks and make decisions—not for short-term comfort, but for long-term outcomes,” he said. “This address was a reminder that leadership means thinking beyond the present.”
His Majesty underscored that Bhutan’s greatest advantage lies not in size or wealth, but in unity and shared purpose. In a world where larger nations often struggle with division, Bhutan’s harmony allows it to undertake ambitious projects with clarity and collective resolve.
From Australia, Sangay Choden echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Bhutan’s small population does not limit its potential for greatness.
“When Bhutanese serve Tsa-Wa-Sum—the sacred responsibility to protect the nation, people, and sovereignty—our size becomes our strength,” she said. “GMC is a project for future generations, and it demands bold contributions from all of us.”
Bhutanese living abroad also felt the weight and urgency of His Majesty’s message. Tandin Wangmo from Canada highlighted the importance of sacrifice and investment in nation-building.
“His Majesty reminded us that real progress requires contribution,” she said. “For GMC to succeed, we must be willing to invest today for better results tomorrow.”
Perhaps the most powerful testament to Bhutan’s unity is action. His Majesty praised the overwhelming response of the Bhutanese people, noting that more than 17,000 volunteers, spanning four generations, have already stepped forward to support volunteer initiatives in Gelephu. Their participation stands as a living symbol of national solidarity and shared responsibility.
As the world faces rapid change, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical instability, His Majesty delivered a timely reminder: it is during good times that nations must prepare for adversity. By strengthening institutions, investing wisely, and planning deliberately, Bhutan can ensure resilience, self-reliance, and continuity along its own development path.
The Royal Address reinforced a fundamental truth—that Bhutan’s future will not be shaped by chance, but by conscious choice. Boldness, unity, and long-term vision are no longer optional; they are essential.
As Bhutan moves forward, the message from the 118th National Day is unmistakable: the future belongs to those who dare to think beyond today, stand together, and act with purpose—for the sake of generations yet to come.
