Thimphu hospital staff alleged of sexual assault

A male staff at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman on Thursday night.

The incident is reported to have occurred between 11pm to 1 am.

The accused is an OT technician and the victim, in her early 30s and mother of two, was an attendant to her aunty who was admitted in the surgical ward.

The accused was on night duty and asked one of the staff in the hospital to call the victim for blood test as the victim’s aunty was in need of blood transfusion from her.

The accused took the victim to the pre-anesthetic checkup room on the pretext of blood test. A cannula (a thin tube inserted into a vein or body cavity to administer medication, drain off fluid, or insert a surgical instrument) was inserted on hand. After that she became unconscious.

When she regained consciousness, she found herself in the emergency room and complained about discomfort in her private part. She was then referred to the forensic department for investigation.

The case was reported to the Women and Child Protection Unit (WCPU) and the accused was arrested from his house at Changedaphu yesterday.

Meanwhile, the officer in charge of Thimphu police said that the investigation is on.

JDWNRH medical superintendent Dr Gosar Pemba said that the case has been forwarded to the forensic department and police for further investigation.
