The Global Peace Prayer Festival (GPPF) is a spectacle few Bhutanese could have imagined. Even those aware of its existence might not have envisioned such a grand celebration being hosted in Bhutan. While the importance of the festival needs no explanation, it becomes more significant for the country as it honors His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, on the occasion of his 70th birth anniversary.
In what is a living tribute to the Fourth King, the celebrations provide a platform through which we can relive the extraordinary life of the Fourth King and reflect upon his vision, wisdom, and transformative leadership. While doing so, we see that the journey is nothing short of legendary.
It is almost unimaginable for a 16-year-old to take the duties of a King. However, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo did. But this young King did not simply inherit a throne; he embraced the destiny of an entire nation. He personally spearheaded Bhutan’s development, listened to his people, and entrusted them with responsibilities to shape their own lives. He elevated Bhutan’s voice on the world stage, addressing global forums and ensuring the Kingdom’s relevance in an ever-changing world. At home, he orchestrated transformative projects that touched every corner of the country — from infrastructure and education to health, industry, and culture.
The Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s life is not only a tale of progress; it is a story of extraordinary selflessness and courage. In a historic and unprecedented act, he surrendered absolute power to the people, guiding Bhutan’s peaceful transition to a Democratic Constitutional Monarchy — a choice made despite initial resistance from those who were unaccustomed to such change.
Further, the Fourth King was not one to shy away from danger. In moments of crisis, he did not simply command his forces from a distance. He marched alongside them, leading with courage, conviction, and unwavering compassion. He embodied the essence of leadership — to serve, to protect, and to inspire.
Reliving the life of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, is akin to embarking on a pilgrimage of the mind and spirit. Along this path, we begin to grasp the magnitude of the extraordinary leader he was — a monarch who stands apart as one of the most exceptional figures in modern history. We witness the careful thought behind every policy, the foresight embedded in every transformation, and the profound wisdom that guided his decisions.
What becomes clear is that the Fourth Druk Gyalpo rarely acted for the present or for immediate acclaim. His mind was fixed on the distant horizon, the future of his people, the enduring welfare of his nation, and the preservation of Bhutan’s unique identity and values. Every choice, every reform, and every initiative was a step toward a vision larger than any single lifetime.
Meanwhile, the GPPF continues and along with it, the recitation of prayers by great masters of Buddhism. Within this grand platform, we do not just relive the life of the Great Fourth; we celebrate him and offer our most sacred and sincere prayers for the Great Fourth’s long life, good health and prosperity.
