NHDCL to start allotting low income accommodation from this month

National Housing Development Corporation Limited (NHDCL) will start allotting low income housing buildings to the applicants from this month.  Twenty buildings out of 62 have been completed at Amochhu. One hundred and sixty units constructed by three contractors are ready for allotment, according to a NHDCL official.

The second phase of allotment for 136 units will start from September and the third phase of allotment for 210 units will start from November this year.

There are 506 units in 10 different locations for low income housing project. The remaining buildings are expected to complete within this year, said the official from NHDCL.

NHDCL is in the process of compiling the list of applicants and verifying for the allotment. The official said that the verification will complete this month and the allocation will start next month after the verification is done and forwarded to the allotment committee. Since the housing is proposed for residents of Jaigaon, the applicants are verified for genuineness. There are 1,259 applicants registered with NHDCL so far. The allotment will be done with the final verification of the applications.

During the verification, some applicants have moved to other dzongkhags. An independent allotment committee has been constituted with Chhukha Dzongdag as chairman and members from Law and Order, NCWC, Drungkhag, Royal Bhutan Police, Thromde, BCCI and NHDCL. The rent in the buildings ranges from Nu 4,000 to 7,000 per month for category 3 and 4.

The project was envisaged by His Majesty The King to address the acute shortage of affordable housing in Phuentsholing. He commanded the Lhengye Zhungtshog to initiate the construction of affordable housing in Phuentsholing through a special committee for affordable housing project, which was constituted with Finance Minister as chairman. NHDCL was directed to plan, design and execute the project. The Salang Tendrel was conducted on July 19,2016.

The total project cost including infrastructure development is Nu 890mn.

The housing project is executed in two different modes; contractual mode where 41 buildings with 296 units are outsourced for private contractors and 20 buildings compriing 200 units are done by the department. There is also a steel structure of 10 units.

NHDCL credits the government and various agencies under Phuentsholing Thromde for the timely completion of the project. “With the completion of affordable housing project consisting of 62 buildings with 506 units, this project would be able to achieve the vision of His Majesty The King,” said NHDCL’s Chief Executive Officer, Thinley Dorji. With the Local Area Plans finalized by Phuentsholing Thromde, the construction of houses will increase thereby reducing the housing crunch, the CEO said.

Meanwhile, the residents of Jaigaon are eager for the allotment. People are said to be waiting for the allotment. “It would be very timely as we are encountering numerous problems here in Jaigaon. It’s great news,” said Sonam Wangdi, a private employee. He has been staying in Jaigaon since he joined a company from 2016.

Another resident said that the lives of people would be improved with better services in Phuentsholing than in Jaigaon. “We have been dealing with issues like electricity, water supply and security. If we get the colony, it would change our lives. We will have better facilities in Phuentsholing,” another private employee said.

People have resorted to residing in Jaigaon for decades due to housing crunch in Phuentsholing, the commercial hub of the country. Still NHDCL will have to come up with similar schemes to resolve housing crunch as people are expected to pour in due to industrial estate development and many other opportunities.
