Indian community celebrates 73rd Independence Day

The Indian community in Bhutan observed the 73rd Independence Day of India with a ceremonial function in the morning of August 15 at the Embassy Residence in Thimphu. 

The National Flag of India was hoisted by Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, followed by singing of the National Anthem by attendees. The Ambassador read out the President’s Address to the Nation and inspected a Parade.

Gyalpoi Zimpon to His Majesty The king, Dasho Ugyen K. Namgyel, presented a scarf to the Ambassador on behalf of the Royal Government of Bhutan. The Zimpon along with the Cabinet Secretary, Foreign Secretary, Vice Chancellor and the Acting Chief of Protocol represented the Royal Government of Bhutan in the ceremony.

The flag hoisting ceremony was attended by the officers and other ranks of the Indian Military Training Team, DANTAK, Indians on deputation with the Royal Bhutanese Government, Representatives from Public Sector Units and other members of the local Indian community.  Over 700 members of the Indian community were present at the ceremony.

To mark the occasion, the Embassy also organized a cultural event at India House Auditorium in the evening of August 15 from 6-7 pm by a musical troupe led by singer Ugyen Pandey.
