17 Years of Unparalleled Leadership

17 Years of Unparalleled Leadership

On November 1, 2008, His Majesty The King received the Dhar Nye-Nga-Nga from the sacred Machhen of Punakha Dzong, marking His Majesty’s formal ascension to the Golden Throne as Bhutan’s Fifth Druk Gyalpo.
Seventeen years have passed since that historic moment, and during this time Bhutan—and indeed the world—has witnessed His Majesty redefine the very essence of leadership. His reign stands as a shining testament to visionary, compassionate, and forward-looking kingship. It has been a period marked by profound progress and guided by His Majesty’s unwavering commitment to national unity, human development, and the long-term security and sovereignty of Bhutan—all grounded in wisdom, humility, and selfless service to the people.
Reflecting on the past 17 years, Dorji Phuntsho, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Securities Exchange of Bhutan (RSEB), said Bhutan’s transformation across every sphere of national life has been “anchored in the wisdom, foresight, and compassion of our beloved Druk Gyalpo.” “His Majesty has steered the nation through times of change and challenge with extraordinary vision—strengthening the foundations of good governance, nurturing human capital, advancing technology and innovation, and safeguarding the sanctity of our environment and culture,” Dorji said. He also highlighted that His Majesty’s approach to leadership is both multifaceted and modern: “We have been privileged to witness His Majesty embody many roles—King, statesman, scholar, entrepreneur, technocrat, and investment banker. This blend of qualities defines a new paradigm of leadership, one perfectly suited for the 21st century.” Dorji further noted that the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) stands as the most profound embodiment of His Majesty’s visionary leadership.
“Conceived and guided by His Majesty, the Mindfulness City represents not just economic transformation but a reimagination of development itself—where sustainability, spirituality, and innovation coexist in perfect harmony. It is a testament to His Majesty’s determination to secure Bhutan’s long-term prosperity and sovereignty, positioning the Kingdom as a beacon of mindful progress in an interconnected world.”
Tandin Wangchuk, an entrepreneur based in Thimphu, recalled that even before His Majesty’s formal coronation, His Majesty had already envisioned a transformed Bhutan, one that upheld its spiritual and cultural integrity while embracing modern governance, technology, and global engagement.
“His Majesty led Bhutan through the transition to democracy, overseeing four parliamentary elections and ensuring stability and continuity. This peaceful and voluntary transition remains unprecedented in the world,” Tandin said.
He added that His Majesty’s leadership is most clearly seen in His ability to rally and inspire the people.
“We’ve seen His Majesty emerge as an inspirational leader. Look at the thousands who volunteer for GMC or how the entire nation came together during the COVID-19 pandemic. That unity reflects the trust and devotion His Majesty inspires.”
Sonam Dorji, a civil servant, said His Majesty’s leadership during the pandemic revealed the depth of His compassion and commitment. “Guided by His Majesty, Bhutan managed the pandemic exceptionally well. His Majesty personally travelled across the country—through towns and villages—to ensure everyone was safe. I have never heard of any leader who did what our King did,” Sonam said. He also highlighted His Majesty’s emphasis on national unity and harmony as the foundation of Bhutan’s strength.
“Under His leadership, Bhutanese identity—rooted in compassion, discipline, and loyalty to the Tsa-Wa-Sum (King, Country, and People)—has remained steadfast, even amid global uncertainty. His Majesty has tirelessly worked to bridge divides, nurture patriotism among the youth, and remind us that Bhutan’s small size can be its greatest strength when we stand united,” Sonam added.
Pema Choki, another civil servant, said His Majesty has taken bold and often quiet steps to safeguard Bhutan’s economic and geopolitical future. “Initiatives such as the Gyalsung National Service and the Gelephu Mindfulness City showcase His Majesty’s wisdom and long-term vision. His Majesty has also strengthened Bhutan’s voice globally—enhancing the country’s standing while preserving its sovereignty and dignity.”
She added that His Majesty is a King of action and presence. “Unlike leaders who delegate from afar, His Majesty leads by example. Whether inspecting national projects, meeting soldiers in border regions, or guiding administrative reforms, His Majesty is deeply involved in every aspect of nation-building. His leadership is practical, hands-on, and strategic—driven by wisdom and a profound sense of duty.”
Summing up, Pema said: “In the past 17 years, His Majesty has proven himself not only as a monarch but as a visionary reformer, guardian, and servant-leader. His reign embodies a rare fusion of modern vision and timeless wisdom, where progress never comes at the cost of values, and compassion remains at the heart of governance. Today, Bhutan stands more confident, resilient, and united than ever before—guided by a leader whose greatness lies not in command, but in service; not in power, but in purpose,” .
