Term begins from May 10 for new elected NC members

With the current National Council membersโ€™ term expiring on May 9, the newly elected NC members will legitimate their term from the next day; thus ensuring the continuity of the NC.

The newly elected members will also have their first sitting of the NC on the same day where the new chairperson and the deputy chairperson of the House would be elected via voting.

Of the 127 candidates that contested in the third NC elections yesterday, the nation elected 20 of them. The result will be declared formally today and submitted to His Majesty the King.

According to the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB), the petition period would start from today and any issues pertaining to the election should be filed within the petition period that ends on May 8 to the High Court.

And for the next 10 days after the election, the elected candidates are reportedly asked to maintain low profile till then return to the capital. The ECB will also award winning certificate to the elected candidates.

Meanwhile, the awarding of the Dakin ceremony by His Majesty the King will happen after May 10, coinciding with any of the auspicious day to the newly elected council members along with the elected chairperson and deputy chairperson.

The Dakin ceremony for the last NC members happened on May 25, 2013.

In 2013, 67 candidates were selected from the Dhamngoi zomdus to contest the NC elections. The first NC election held in 2007- 2008 saw 52 candidates.
