After almost a week, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has again declared seven more candidates for the upcoming elections yesterday in Thimphu.
The new candidates comprise two Director Generals who also served as Dzongdags, a former parliamentarian, a medical doctor, an urban planner, a geologist and a forestry fire manager.
The two Director Generals comprise the Former Director General of Department of Local Governance, Lungten Dorji, and Former Director General of National Library and Archives of Bhutan, Dorji Norbu. The former will contest from Panbang constituency in Zhemgang, while the latter will represent the party from Nganglam constituency in Pemagatshel.
Lungten Dorji has 27 years of experience in the civil service and served in various leadership positions. Starting as a trainee officer with the erstwhile home ministry, he went on to serve as the Deputy Director of Department of Immigration and Census and as the Head of the Office of Census Commissioner. He also served as Dzongdag of Trashigang and Trongsa for 10 years before becoming Director General. Lungten Dorji has master’s degree in Public Administration (Territorial Administration) from the International Institute of Public Administration, France.
Meanwhile, Dorji Norbu began his career in the civil service in 1984. He served as the Joint Director of the erstwhile Planning Commission and later as Dzongdag of Trashiyantse and Trashigang. He also served as the Director of Civil Registration and Census and Director of Department of Local Governance. Dorji Norbu has a Post Graduate Diploma (equivalent to Master of Science) in Demography and Population Studies from International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, India.
Former parliamentarian Sonam Penjore, who served during the first democratically elected parliament from 2008 to 2013, was declared as another candidate from Kengkhar-Weringla constituency in Monggar.
As MP, Sonam Penjore served as Chairman of Public Accounts Committee and member of Asian Regional Association of Public Account Committee. Before joining politics, Sonam Penjore worked in various leadership capacities in Bhutan National Bank, other corporate and private offices.
Sonam Penjore has a masters’ degree in Business Administration (Finance) from Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia.
A medical doctor, Dr. Lobzang Dorji, is another new candidate the party is fielding from Jomotshangkha-Martshala constituency in Samdrup Jongkhar.
Dr. Lobzang Dorji started as Medical Officer at JDWNRH and also served as District Medical Officer in Punakha and Tsirang and later served as Medical Superintendent of Central Regional Referral Hospital in Gelephu.
He also worked as Public Health Consultant to Ministry of Education and as Country Team Leader for Local Fund Agent, UNOPS and Global Fund. He also served as CEO of Padkar Diagnostic Centre, Thimphu and as Technical Officer of WHO in Bhutan.
Dr. Lobzang Dorji has a Masters in Public Health and a Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS).
PDP also declared Housing and Infrastructure Engineer Wangdi Gyeltshen as its candidate from Dewathang-Gomdar constituency in Samdrup Jongkhar.
During his career as a housing engineer, Wangdi Gyeltshen has overseen several national projects. He also participated as a candidate during the 2013 primary round election and later served as the General Secretary of Construction Association of Bhutan.
He has a Bachelor in Civil Engineering from RMIT, Melbourne, Australia, a Post Graduate Diploma in Housing, Planning and Building from HIS, Rotterdam, Netherlands and Msc. in Urban Housing Management from Lund/Erasmus University, Rotterdam/ Lund, Sweden and Netherlands.
Geologist Dr. Tobgay Tobgay (PhD) is another candidate representing the party from Dramedtse-Ngatshang constituency in Monggar.
Dr. Tobgay Tobgay served as Senior Geologist with Department of Geology and Mines for over 13 years. He also worked as Assistant Research Professor for three years at the University of Texas at El Paso, USA. He has been also been working as a Consulting Geologist.
He has a Doctor of Philosophy in Geosciences from Princeton University, New Jersey, USA. He also has Masters of Arts (Geosciences) from Princeton University and Masters of Science in Geology from the University of Texas at El Paso, USA. He has a Bachelor of Science (Geology) from University Wollongong, Australia.
The Former Head of Forest Fire Management Division, Department of Forest and Park Services, Tandin Dorji, is the seventh candidate who was announced by PDP as its candidate from South Thimphu in Thimphu.
Tandin Dorji has worked as Project Manager of Small Grant Project, NAPA, UNDP. He also worked as Focal Person for Disaster Management and Supervisor for Tashichhodzong beautification and landscaping project. He was also the President of Australian Bhutan Association of Canberra. He was also the Coordinator of Friends of Police (RBP).
Tandin Dorji has a Masters of Environment from Australian National University, Australia.
