Face to Face: Jigme Singye, founder of Happy Delivery

In today’s fast paced world when every minute is precious, Jigme Singye, a 28-year-old from Jamkhar, Trashiyangtse who completed his Masters degree from the College of Natural Resources, Lobesa in 2016 has founded Happy Delivery, a service that delivers Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) at your doorsteps in the capital. When he started initially, Jigme Singye used to deliver grocery items from door-to-door services but the business did not go as well as he had expected. So he started delivering LPG in the second phase in August 2017.

In December 2017, Jigme Singye availed a license for his delivery service and that was when Happy Delivery Services was born. At first, he did not have a car; he delivered things carrying physically and at times borrowed his friend’s car to deliver at each customer’s doorstep. But now, he owns his own Bolero single cabin. Jigme Singye received the first runners up prize at Business Idea Competition of Bhutan at Thimphu Tech Park. Business Bhutan reporter Tshering talks to the entrepreneur about his long journey from hardship to success.

1. How did this Business idea come up?

Answer: One day when I went to get refilled gas, I had to reserve a taxi and go through traffic congestion and wait for another hour to get my gas. At that point I thought I could help those people who don’t have enough time or cars and women who have tough time lifting things up. So this is how Happy Delivery Services started.

2. How much loan did you avail and from where?

Answer: I started with the help of friends using their car and now have availed  a loan of Nu 1.4mn from Loden Foundation with which I bought a single cabin bolero.

3. Describe your daily work.

Answer: Our free toll number is 1180 but customers call mostly at our Bmobile number. We get orders and deliver it to their respective place the next day depending on the gas stock in the fuel depot from Begena till Namselling. Our services include pick-up to drop and if customers desire, fitting too.

4. What are the challenges and advantages you face?

Answer: More demand than the supply as most the time fuel depot runs out of stock which affect our business. Our services are improvised as per the customers’ feedback. If a customer provides his/her street name then it becomes easier to deliver the LPG. Our service makes the customer’s life easier saving time and traffic hassles.

5. Any future plans to expand your business?

Answer: I am planning to set a mobile app for gas delivery, grocery items and fast food too but it will take time to happen; we are currently studying a market strategy to convince people to use our services.

6. Any comments on the Bhutanese market for new business ideas?

Answer: If you have new and raw business ideas then there is a positive chance for your business idea to expand and succeed. One cannot make a million overnight but with small steps you can be a millionaire one day.

7. Which are the three top skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

Answer: There is no magic or medicine to be a successful entrepreneur but if you have the passion, positive thoughts and work hard then you will definitely be a successful entrepreneur. You also need the will to learn from mistakes.

8. What is your advice to today’s youth who are unemployed?

Answer: Believe in yourself and dreams as the road to success is not always easy; there will be obstacles on your way but steel yourself, be determined and tackle the challenges head on to move forward.
