Computer science program to be phased out from Sherubtse College

Students opting for the Bachelors of Science (Computer Science) course will be enrolled in Gyalpoizhing College of Information Technology (GCIT) in Monggar instead of Sherubtse College from next year.

However, students currently pursuing the program at Sherubtse would continue their degree at the college.

This July’s intake will be the last batch to graduate from the college. After July 2019, Computer Science students would be admitted directly at GCIT.

GCIT is one of the three new colleges in the east.

Sherubtse College president Tshering Wangdi said that the move to transfer the program was following the recommendation from the academic board of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB).

Tshering Wangdi said that the transfer would be done phase-wise. “When the first batch of computer science students joins GCIT in 2019, the second and the third year students would continue here at Sherubtse.” He added that by 2021, the program would be completely phased out from Sherubtse College.

Meanwhile, he also said that this year, two assistant lecturers will be sent to GCIT. “Again next year, we will send two additional teachers and retain only three teachers at Sherubtse to teach some programming papers in BSc Physics, BSc Mathematics and IT.”

The initiative aims to streamline and to improve the quality of courses that are being offered at the college. Additionally, as recommended by the academic board, the BSc Computer Science program would be more suitable to be offered at GCIT as the courses would blend in well with other information technology (IT) based programs at the new college.

“Except for the BSc Computer Science program, the remaining computer-based programs taught in other courses would continue.”

BSc Computer Science was introduced under the RUB in 2006.

The course teaches undergraduate students Java, programming language and database system among others.

Sherubtse College plans to launch new courses such as BSc Statistics and BSc Data Science from next year.
